What You Need to Know to Protect Your Digital IDs
A digital ID, also called as a digital certificate helps protect electronic documents from unauthorized access, thus making them tamper-proof. It is just a file on your computer that helps establish and prove your identity while communicating electronically with another computer or another person. For example, if you are using the online banking facilities of your bank, you will first need to prove to the bank that you are the person authorized to access the account and carry out the transactions. Your digital ID will help prove your identity to the bank. Similarly, if you are trying to send an email with a PDF file that contains confidential information to others, by using a digital signature to sign the email, you are confirming to them that it is indeed you who has sent the email and that it has not been tampered with during transition. Of course, during transition, the PDF file may get a little damaged but you should be able to use any one of the easily available recovery tools to quickly repair pdf files. If your digital ID falls in the wrong hands, they can access valuable data meant for you. Here are some steps you could take to protect your digital IDs.
" Store your digital IDs in a safe and secure place where others will not be able to easily access it.
" If you are using your digital ID form a computer that is in your workplace, chances are that others may also have access to your computer. Try to use a screensaver so that no one can access your computer without your knowledge. Make sure that you shut down your computer at the end of the day.
" Many operating systems allow you to use screensavers that can be opened only after entering a password.
" Your digital ID is also susceptible to hardware and software failures as also to virus attacks. Of course, data from damaged PDF files can still be restored but you may have to use sophisticated recovery tools such as Advanced PDF Repair to repair pdf files that have been corrupted due to virus attacks, software problems or sudden hardware failures.
The private key with which you can sign PDF files and using which you can unlock encrypted files meant for you is usually stored on your computer. You can lend it some added protection by providing a password to restrict access to the private key. If you would like to use the private key, you will need to enter the password. You could choose not to use any password to protect the private key. You could use this option if you are absolutely sure that no unauthorized person will be able to access your computer. Remember, it may be easier to repair pdf files that are highly corrupt than having to restore digital ID that have been accessed by unauthorized persons. Instead of leaving the protection of your digital ID to chance, you should simply use a password to safeguard the digital ID.
